Away we go again!
Time to get this blog happening!
No sooner had the first post been entered here 17 months ago and this family lawyer learned she was in the family way so blogging took a backseat to morning sickness followed by baby preparations (think countless lists of things to do, things to buy and all manner of baby trivia) followed by the shock of realising that despite my countless lists I really was completely clueless as to what to do with a newborn baby! Fortunately for me, my son was a relatively cruisy baby who took his mother’s inexperience in his stride and I like to think he has taught me well.
So, 9 months after becoming a Mum, I have emerged from my foggy abyss of nappies, feeding, coffee groups and playcentre, sleepless nights and endless days spent wearing one’s pyjamas and fearing I will never see a shower again to start family lawyer-ing again. I’ve always maintained you don’t have to have children to be a good family lawyer in much the same way as you don’t have to have your own whale to be a good marine biologist! I still believe this but have to say that I think my experience of becoming a mum has given me a deeper appreciation of the challenges faced by parents and the heartache that my clients must feel when they can’t be with their children.
While I was on maternity leave, I was never far from the world of family law as I always had one eye on what was happening at Family Law Results. However, I have loads of reading to catch up on which will hopefully give me lots to write about here.
And before I sign off, here is an awesome piece of news to finish this post with: Last Friday we learned Family Law Results has been nominated for the “Family Law Award” in this year’s NZ Law Awards. We have only now picked ourselves up off the floor after the initial shock. What a way to end the week! I am so proud of my team.
